The Episcopal Aquaponics Experiment
The Episcopal Aquaponics Experiment is a pilot project of the diocese in partnership with St. Mary’s Cathedral to explore the relationship between faith communities and food systems. Growing fresh produce and raising tilapia, this project is an attempt to provide both access to food and jobs in an under-resourced community. By providing food for purchase to the cathedral community, the community invests in the neighborhood and provides access to jobs and a reduced cost of food to neighbors who are food insecure.
In late October 2016, the Cathedral launched a pop-up market to connect the community to different entrepreneurial startups such as the aquaponics farm and a local bakery. The market was a success selling out of fresh-baked bread, oak leaf lettuce, and heirloom and red romaine lettuces.
So far, the farm has been able to provide a few hours of work to one neighborhood resident.
